Things To Do In Copan Ruinas

Things to do in Copán

2008

Happy New Year, we KNOW things will be really great in 2008, we hope to see you hear this year, it's a great place to live, a great place to visit and there are so many things to do. During the Holidays I had a Guatemalan family in my shop (Licuados Express) drinking some of that fabulous coffee from Finca Miramundo who said they would be back this week because they could not believe there were so many things to do, and sometimes, when you live here (over 17 years) you forget and need to sit down and think about it, so here goes, let's see how many things I can think of here

1. Tour of the Ruins Main Group, Sepulturas (the residential section 2 km from the main group)

2. Tour of the museums, Children's Museum (casa Kínich, scheduled to reopen in March 2008 with twice the space, gift shop, and it features my favourite thing CHOCOLATE) Sculpture Museum (at the Ruins) Town Museum on the Park.

3. Tour the Hot Springs, either the Spa at the hot springs with massages, aromatherapy, and steam bath, or the natural springs that have paths that are marked with markers highlighting the flora and fauna

4. Tour Sepulturas, which is located inside the San Lucas Resort, so you have to do that too, what a setting, need I say more, click on their button and read all about them. They have recently added gourmet food preparation and classes along with their yoga retreats. Fabulous Flavia has got literally Heaven on earth

5. Happy Hours, Twisted Tanya´s, Bar Xilbaba, both are known for their house cocktails that are more than generous, and Tanya's four course meals are talked about all over town!.

6. Detoxify with noni, the Tahitian fruit that has all those really incredible healing powers.

7. Tour the Bird Sanctuary, either inside the Macaw Mountain Bird Park, or outside the natural habitat. Macaw Mountain's entrance fee is good for two days and it is a guaranteed eye-opener, with the colours, calls, and they have a gift shop that is really really wonderful.

8. Support the Indigenous, take a moment to read the Copan association web page about their projects that are ongoing, they are responsible for the Sculpture Museum, the Casa Kínich, and they have collectors t-shirts available at the ruins as well as embroidered totes and they official guides for the ruins, Spanish and English.

9. Drink Cappuccino, Espresso, Café Americano, or Café Negro at the Macaw Mountain Coffee Shop or Licuados Express Shop, both serve the same Miramundo Coffee and have it available by the pound ground or whole bean, take AT LEAST five pounds home with you, I say that because no one ever takes enough!

10. Eat until you explode, hand thrown, handmade pizza, homemade hamburgers and T-bone steaks available at Jim´s Pizza, Waffles and Bagels with Crème Cheese available at Licuados Express, The Full Monty Breakfast at Café/Bar Xilbaba, Shishkabobs and seafood at the Blue Morpha Café located in the Bird Sanctuary, Four course meals at Twisted Tanya´s Second Story Sunset Terrace.

11. Learn Spanish at the Xbalanque Spanish School, room and board with a family for a week with four hours of classes, a bargain

12. Take a side tour to the islands, horseback tour of Copan, tour of the Ruins, through Copan Connections, or any tour for that matter, in and around the Village, they will hook you up.

13. See the Orchid Farm and the Butterfly Farm, located at the entrance to Copan Ruinas as you are coming in from Guatemala. Over 300 varieties of orchids have been photographed and the butterflies are always hatching and flitting around.

14. Lay in the lap of luxury at the La Posada Hotel located outside of Copan Ruinas, they have a huge pool and will bring your cool drink poolside or stay in the middle of things at the Camino Maya, with their indoor garden seating outside of Elisa´s Restaurant and Xilbalba Happy Hour.
